The spill was discovered at around 3am on Monday morning after Valley Drive residents noticed no water was running from their taps.
Director of water and waste, Bruce Logan, said a 500 millimetre main on Armidale Road split and caused the inundation.

“It was a significant amount of water that came out of the main and unfortunately around 10 properties on the downhill side of the main have been inundated with water,” Mr Logan said.
He said council would bear the cost of clean-ups and repairs and was assisting residents to find alternative accommodation.
“That will be at our cost, we’ll either pay for that or our insurer will pay for that,” he said.
“Hopefully, the more minor issues could be solved by the end of the week.
“Whatever we have to do, we’ll do it.”
Mr Logan said the Armidale Road main was one of council’s older pipes and wasn’t slated for replacement any time soon.
“There’s very few tests you can do, in fact there’s none, to test whether a water main is about to fail in that way,” he said.
“You can look at the interior surface of the water main, if that looks fine, then the only other reason is some sort of imperfection in the main itself or some corrosion on the outside and can’t look at that unless you dig the pipe up.”
Council expects the ruptured main to be repaired before Tuesday.
