Anyone with these qualities who is looking to become a firefighter, now has their chance with Gunnedah Fire and Rescue 314 seeking a new retained firefighter to join their ranks.
Gunnedah Fire and Rescue Captain, Dave Welch told The Namoi Valley Independent the successful applicant would need to prepared for “anything”.
“We are looking for someone with daytime availability from Monday to Friday,” Captain Welch said.
“As well as being physically ready to do the job, it is also important that the successful applicant be mentally ready.
“Anything, anywhere, anytime, that’s the Fire and Rescue NSW motto.”
Captain Welch said adding a new member to the team was exciting.
“The diversity you get through working with Fire and Rescue is certainly a major selling point,” he said.
“We work closely with all of the other emergency services such as Rural Fire Service (RFS), State Emergency Service (SES) and the police.
“So by working in with those guys you really do get to see a variety of things such as house fires, pesticide spills and everything in between.”
The Gunnedah captain said while the team is recruiting, winter fire safety should still be a priority for locals.
“We also want to take this opportunity while we are looking for a new firefighter, to encourage locals to remain winter fire safe,” Captain Welch said.
“Winter tends to be the worst time of year for house fires in NSW and there is so much everyone can do to prevent them.
“It can take just three-minutes for a fire to take hold of a home, so doing things like not over-loading power boards, turning off electronic blankets when not in use and not bringing wheat bags to bed are simple things that can drastically lower the risk of a house fire.
“Also keeping things like clothes and curtains ‘a metre from the heater’ is also an easy way of being winter fire safe.”
