Officers have been told the armed man entered the Queen Elizabeth Drive store just before 10pm.
He threatened a male employee and demanded cash.
The employee refused, and the man attempted to open the till, before leaving the scene empty-handed.
New England officers established a crime scene and launched an investigation.
The man is described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, about 170cm tall and with a solid build. He was wearing a jacket and long pants, and had his face covered.
It comes after the armed robbery of a fast food outlet on Dumaresq Street at the weekend, which was captured on CCTV.
It is believed a man entered the restaurant, threatening staff and demanding cash, just before 10pm on Saturday.
He is described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, aged between 25 and 35, and was wearing a blue jumper with the hood pulled over his face.

No one was injured in either incident.
New England Acting Superintendent Roger Best said police are investigating whether the two robberies are linked.
“What is of concern is Saturday night, around the same time 10pm, we had a robbery of another fast food restaurant in Armidale, and although at this point we can’t say definitively they are connected,” he said.
“Our detectives are looking at both of those and will keep an open mind but I will be very very surprised if it is not the same offender, and I would be very surprised if we didn’t have some movement on that front very soon.”
