He also features prominently in any player’s player voting after games by his teammates.
On Saturday, Buckley, 24, played a major role in Werris Creek’s 28-20 win over Boggabri at David Taylor Park. The Magpies led 26-4 at half-time after coming back from an early 4-nil deficit to dominate much of the first half and then hang on for a determined win.
It places them equal fourth with both Dungowan and Narrabri in what will be a five-team semi-final series.
Fourth spot, Dellar points out, comes with a home semi.
He also pointed out Zac Buckley after Saturday’s clash.
“That’s him behind you,” Dellar nodded to a slender frame that could have easily passed as one of the ball boys.
“He’s Grant Buckley’s brother,” Ron added in reference to the talented jockey.
Buckley laughs at the joke made by the affable club stalwart.
“Nah,” he said, although, give him silks and a saddle and the former Baradine boy could easily pass for a jockey.
He also rode the Magpies home with a busy display in attack and defence on Saturday.
Buckley’s always a hard worker but there were 10 different nominees for the club player’s player yelled prop and local policeman, Chris Wilson. However, Buckley stood out.
A marine mechanic at Mac’s Marine in Tamworth, he’s in his second year with the Magpies.
“It’s great,” he said.
“Got a great bunch of blokes down here, couldn’t get a better bunch of blokes.”
