BIKE RIDING
When Scone-raised Sam Hill, 22, won a sprint finish against two Sydney riders, Tom Bolton and Angus Calder, to claim his second Gunnedah to Tamworth road race on a bitterly cold and windy Sunday, he did so having survived a major incident early in the race.
RUGBY UNION
The Pirates’ didn’t score one of their runaway wins that have become the norm this season, instead having to grind out a gutsy 33-27 win over Barraba-Gwydir. Pirates led 21-12 at half-time before being down on the scoreboard with eight minutes on the clock. However, the Pirates got back on top to take the win in a match coach Mat Kelly described as “one of those great battles”.

Gunnedah captain Ben Maher has promised the Bulldogs a “fun two weeks” full of of running and small skills work as the side heads into a fortnight without competition matches. On the back of an 8.12 (60) to 3.15 (33) loss to Inverell at Varley Oval, the Bulldogs will have back-to-back byes with the representative round and the side’s regular bye.
SOCCER
Oxley Vale Attunga and Norths United had to settle for a point apiece from Saturday’s Northern Inland Premier League clash. The score between the two sides ended at 1-1 thanks largely to the two goalkeepers.
RUGBY LEAGUE
Kootingal-Moonbi completed the first round of the revamped competition with a 78-6 hammering of the Narrabri Blues at Kootingal Oval on Saturday. The undefeated, table-topping Roosters led 32-6 at half time and never relented in a 15-try demolition. Fullback Mitch Doring scored five tries in a brilliant display whilst hooker Ryan Martin crossed for three and centre Mitch Denning and winger Anthony “Bluey” Smith posted doubles.
