Pirates led 21-12 at half-time before being down on the scoreboard with eight minutes on the clock.
However, the Pirates got back on top to take the win in a match coach Mat Kelly described as “one of those great battles”.
“We started very poorly but we got back into it and they were good at home,” Kelly said.
“We were missing a lot [of players] but we knew we could get a result. We just had to work hard for it.”
Kelly said he was looking forward to welcoming back some players to make things a lot easier next week.
“We really had to stretch the club to make up some good numbers and the reserve grade win was even better. They won after the bell,” Kelly said.
Kelly named Andrew Mepham, Sam Collins, Andrew Wynne and Conrad Starr amongst his side’s best.
