After a tough start to the Northern Inland Premier League season, the club took two teams over to Gunnedah and finished first and second.
The win could very well reignite Northies’ season but that wasn’t the reason the teams headed over to Gunnedah.

“There was no thought in going over there that we had to win or anything like that. It was just a bit of fun and a way to build a bit of spirit within the team,” North Companions first grade coach Gavin Thompson said.
Thompson added: “Both teams did really well.
“I played in the team that came second – I played in goals all day – and it’s just a lot of fun.
“In the second team we had a combination of juniors as well as guys from third grade and reserve grade. It’s just a good day out for the club.”
Thompson also said the club always tries to support the competition.
“Six-a-side is a different game and it’s good for fitness for the boys and a bit of fun,” Thompson said.
“But it’s really for Richard Grant and his mother [Phyllis]. Richard’s a mate of mine and we always to support it.”
After nine rounds, North Companions sit in sixth position on the NIPL ladder with four points next to their name.
Northies haven’t quite been able to get over the line throughout the season with four losses by just one goal.
“I could say a lot of things are the reasons behind it,” Thompson said of the slow start.
“The loss of important players is a big one but we’re not creating the chances we’d like to and silly mistakes are costing us.
“We’re not that far off the mark and hopefully we can turn it around.
“We’re all working hard and want to start winning. Sometimes it’s easier said than done.”
Thompson said the club had blooded a lot of youth this season and those juniors were finding their feet.
“We have a lot of young kids and we’re trying to give them a go,” Thompson said.
“For the most part they [North Companions] are doing well. It’s just five-minute, 10-minute spells where we lose concentration and other teams are able to capitalise on that.
“If we are able to maintain our discipline and concentration hopefully we can turn things around.”
North Companions will have the bye this weekend which will help Amine Lihia who picked up a groin injury in Gunnedah.
