On Thursday the Tamworth teen was eliminated from the 16-years category at the BMX world championships in the quarter-finals, after coming off worst in a first-corner scuffle with two Colombians.

It resulted in him losing speed out of the corner and he dropped from third to fifth. The top four advanced to the semi-finals.

Davis said the incident “threw him out the back”. “And yeah, it’s a long way to come back from there,” he said.

The Year 10- Farrer student had brought excellent form into the quarter-finals at his fourth consecutive world championships. He won two of his three moto races and won his 1/8 final in the fastest time. “I was feeling pretty confident. I was feeling strong,” he said. “It's a bit of a bummer, but, you know, that’s how racing goes.”

His best result at the world championships was fourth place last year.

Before returning home, the reigning Australia champion will spend a few days in Dubai with his mother, Katrina, and then resume honing his skills in preparation for his move into the junior elite category next year, which he described as “basically pro”. “So from now until next year we’re just focusing on hitting all that bigger pro stuff that those guys have to do,” he said. 

His build up to that momentous occasion will include the remaining rounds of the national series and the NSW state championships.
