WEG took control of the flailing club early last year, and are now planning a possible $5 milion transformation with the backing of both Tennis NSW and Tennis Australia, as well as the state government.

While four synthetic courts have already been resurfaced, Mr Laing is hopeful of getting the funding to install hard surface courts, including two new courts and a showcourt in an effort to “become a hub for tennis in the North West.” 

Included in the proposed renovations is a new look modern clubhouse and bar, with Melbourne’s Curtin Architects expected to return to Tamworth in the next fortnight to further finalise plans.

“We are still fine tuning plans, and looking to change a few things around,” Mr Laing said.

“We are going to move the pro-shop, and put the bar down the Napier Street end, as well as have a 20 car car park, including two disabled parks among other things.

Earlier in the year Tennis NSW head of operations Chris Woodland was “excited” by the proposal, and expressed that the governing body would like to see the club eventually hold state, national and even international tournaments.

“We always wanted to get the courts done first so we will have to wait on the results of the grant application,” Mr Laing said.

“It is still early days as far as planning, and we won’t know anything until later in the year, although it has all been extremely positive so far.”
