The women’s side, down by 10 points as the clock wound down in the third quarter, rallied in the final term to score a 56-50 win over Newcastle at the Tamworth Sports Dome.
Taylor Skelton hit a pair of three-pointers on either side of the third quarter break to kickstart the comeback.
Two and a half minutes into the fourth quarter, the Bolts trailed by just one.
They hit the lead midway through before powering away to victory.
“It was a great game. It was a true team effort from everyone on and off the bench,” Tamworth coach Robyn Skelton said.
“It was a consistent effort from everyone. I was so happy and proud of the girls.
“We’re still in a rebuilding stage and to come away with a win over Newcastle indicated their [the Thunderbolts] potential.”
There was talk after the game that the win was 14 years since the women’s side had beaten Newcastle at home and seven since both men’s and women’s side had won on the same night.
For Skelton, she was just thrilled her side was gelling.
“They were third on the ladder and we’re sitting sixth. For us to be third place is great,” Skelton said.
“My goal for this year was to be competitive. For us to have some solid wins, it just proves that what I’m aiming for is realistic.
“I really felt as a team we gelled and our bench, it’s a fair comment to say our bench pulled the girls through the last quarter.”
Nine players got on the scoreboard for the home side with Rachel James leading the way with 11 points.
