While the awards mean plenty to the 13 strong team of volunteers, the real prize is the jewel at the foot of the hills that is Endeavour Park, and particularly the improvements that have been made over the last five years.

President John McDarmont was on hand to accept the award, and said that while it is always great to be recognised, the quality of the park and what it means to the community is the true reward.

“It’s absolutely magic up there these days, and that is what we all strive for – it is so important to the community,” he said.

“We get comments from all over Australia and the world because it is such a beautiful spot, it is free and so close to town – it is a great escape for both kids and parents.” 

While the Marsupial Park has been in operation for 45 years, in November 2015 the ribbon was cut on the all new multi-million dollar Adventure Playground, which took over 700 volunteers to construct and added an entire new dimension to what is now one of Tamworth’s most popular attractions.

“Hopefully, if anything, winning this award will let even more people know about the park,” Mr McDarmont said.

“The awards are not something we strive for, we do it for the fun of it.” 

It is estimated that 60,000 people come through the gates of the Marsupial Park every year to not only use the Adventure Playground, but also get up close and personal with kangaroos and wallabies, emus, rabbits, guinea pigs and a variety of birds both in cages and in the trees.

Entry is free with Tamworth Regional Council giving around $90,000 a year, while the donation tins at the entry and exit contribute around $20,000 more.
