Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson said the flood improvement work at Tommy Swamp, seven kilometres west of Carroll is due to commence on May 26.
“With about 4000 motorists travelling on the Oxley Highway every day between Gunnedah and Tamworth, this project will improve safety and efficiency”, Mr Anderson said.
“When it rains heavily, localised flooding cuts the highway at Tommy Swamp which causes lengthy traffic delays and inconvenience to travellers and businesses alike.
“There is also a financial impact, particularly for trucks transporting freight on the Oxley Highway.”
“This is why the improvements are being made to help reduce the frequency of flooding on the Oxley Highway at Tommy Swamp.
“These measures have been designed to ensure the road can stay open for longer during flood events.”

Roads and Maritime Services said the Tommy Swamp Project will involve raising the road level to remove the ‘dip’ and installing new drainage.
It will take around six weeks to complete, weather permitting. Work will be carried out between 7am and 5pm from Monday to Friday.
There will be some minor impacts for the travelling public, with traffic reduced to one lane with alternate flow during work hours.
Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.
