Their first win was in round one against the Tamworth Kangaroos, and now the Suns have managed to score their second win against the other Tamworth side – the Swans.
Fresh off the bye, the Suns boys were looking to add some points onto the AFL North West ladder against the Swans who had, with a couple of wins under their belt in recent weeks, were proving to be a team not to be underestimated.
True to recent form, they came out firing, scoring the first goal of the match soon after the starter siren of the first quarter.
The Swans showed some dangerous form, however some inaccuracies off the boot caused some goal attempts to go wide early.
The Suns boys picked up their game and went out to a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter. With some consolidated work in the second quarter, keeping the Swans goal-less, they took a narrow lead 5.5-35 to 2.11-23 into half time.
Third quarter saw a rejuvenated Suns add seven goals to their tally, led by captain Zach Collier who slotted three through the posts. A late effort push by the Swans in the final quarter tested the Suns steel and discipline, however ultimately they ran away with the win 16.11-107 to 8.14-62.
There may have been more than 40 points in it, but senior men’s player Ash Jones said it was a tougher game than the scoreboard suggested.
“It was definitely a tough game. It wasn’t as easy as the scoreboard looked,” he said.
“We went well throughout but in the third quarter we outnumbered them and put a lot of points on the board.”
Jones said his side hit their targets, with their kicks “going where they needed to go”.
“Our fitness really outlasted them in the last quarter,” he added.
“Playing at home always helps. We always seem to get a stronger side when we’re playing at home.”
Danny Brown was a standout on the day, while Jock Brazel stepped up and had a top game in his first seniors match. He was one of a few players who stepped up to play seniors on Saturday.
Although a few ball handling skills let them down at times, Jones said overall there wasn’t much they could have done better.
The Suns will travel to Tamworth this Saturday to take on the Roos for the start of the second round of competition.
Although the Suns were the victors the first time the two sides met, Jones said the Roos are always a good side at home.
“Hopefully we can go over there with a full-strength side,” he said.
