The Open Day was not only a great chance for kids to live out the dream of playing on the “big red trucks” and meeting the fire fighters, but also a great opportunity for NSW Fire and Rescue to drum home the importance of fire safety and prevention around the home.
New England Zone Commander Tom Cooper said getting that message out as the winter kicks in is really important.

“While it has only really started to cool down over the last few weeks we have already seen an increase in house fires with incidents in Uralla, Werris Creek, Glen Innes and Armidale,” he said.
“People should be aware of overloading power points, electric blankets, clothes dryers, getting their chimney flues looked at, and other things that can cause issues.”
At the Open Day’s firefighters also put on some demonstrations, including a rescue demonstration at Uralla, while other stations carried out CPR and first aid displays as well.
“It was a good opportunity to let the public see what else we do, and how we operate,” Commander Cooper said.
