Nundle has again attracted hordes of serious – and not-so-serious – doggy competitors and their handlers to one of its biggest events of the year.

The Great Nundle Dog Race has been run and won again by the Purcell family’s Tatar, who also took out the event last year.

But the biggest winner was “just Nundle in general”, local school principal Stephen Gadd said.

“The town really turned it on; the weather was beautiful,” he said.

“We probably had close to 50 volunteers for the day which, when you think about it, for the size of the community is pretty electric.

“It’s a tribute to our P&C that they can pull together that many people to volunteer their time and make the event what it is.”

A highlight of the day for P&C president John Krsulja was the competition to find the best singing dog.

Alex Stones of Bingara took that out with her dog Tora – who “sang” a Beyonce song.

Krsulja and fellow Nundle singer Toni Swain “looked for melody, rhythm and timing”, he said.

“They all did good,” he said.

“One was asking questions of his dog and his dog would answer – it was more of a stand-up routine.

“The whole thing was a classic, it just kept giving ... we kept saying, ‘Is there anyone else?’ and they just kept stepping forward.”
