Emergency services were called to a car park on Plain Street after reports of a fire in a garbage truck about 6.45am.
Two fire units were tasked to the scene.
A Tamworth Regional Council spokesperson said the driver noticed smoke coming from the truck and followed “good due process” in alerting authorities.
The rubbish was removed from the truck and extinguished by fire crews.
The spokesperson said the rubbish was later transferred into a skip bin and taken to the Tamworth landfill.
It was not known on Tuesday, what the cause of the fire was.
