He said council had a responsibility to assist, financially or professionally, in attracting events to town.
“That’s not just kicking the tin for dough,” he said. “It could be help with negotiations or contracts.”
Jim Maxwell voted against the sponsorship, while he saw the event as a success, he said councils could help in other ways, with waste management , for example.
“The game already put Tamworth on the map, I didn’t see any need to contribute further,” he said.
Tamworth the real winner: Kevin Anderson
WHILE it was the Newcastle Knights who came away with the points in their NRL clash against the Wests Tigers, local MP Kevin Anderson says Tamworth was the real winner.
Mr Anderson felt the “electrifying atmosphere” from the middle of Scully Park, in his role as the ground announcer.
“It was an extraordinary experience, there is no doubt about it,” Mr Anderson said.
“The game was broadcast live and that was an excellent way to showcase our city, not only for sport but for tourism as a whole.”
There are already talks about hosting a similar event in the future.
“There’s been overwhelming support to bring something like that again, and it goes to show that we can do it,” he said.
