Armed with flags and signs and donning jerseys and scarves, it was a sea of orange and black and blue and red as the Newcastle Knights and Wests Tigers took to the football field.
The sell-out event saw fans travel from as far as Queensland for the Saturday evening spectacle with the NRL players met with big cheers from the crowd as they ran out onto the field.
Organisers say they hope the weekend rugby league game could be the first of many big events to be held in the city in the future.
