The Nissan X-Trail and Holden Cruz collided head-on on Scott Rd shortly before 11.30am.
The driver of the Holden, a 65-year-old woman, was trapped in the wreckage for a short time before she was freed by rescue paramedics.
She suffered suspected lower leg and hip injuries and was taken to Tamworth hospital.
She was believed to be in a stable condition.
The driver of the Nissan, a 48-year-old Tamworth man, was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Officers are investigating whether the Nissan might have crossed to the wrong side of the road. The crash shut the road for sometime, while fire crews mopped up the road and the wreckages were cleared.
Police have interviewed witnesses and are investigating whether a medical condition could have contributed to the crash.
No charges have been laid and investigations continue.
