“In Carthage Street, most of the houses you want to talk about are still there, they haven’t pulled down,” the Tamworth Historical Society’s Rod Hobbs said.
“Hardly anyone had built there until the 1870s. When they did build it was the wealthy influential people – the Cohens and the Hymans, people like that.
“It became the fashionable place to built, particularly between Bourke and Fitzroy.”
Mr Hobbs said there were some “fantastic stories” behind the houses, many of which have beautiful 1870s to early 1900 architecture.
“The Cohen family I'm going to be talking about a lot, they were a very influential family in Tamworth, and owned most of the land on the top side between Bourke and Brisbane Street,” he said.
The walk starts on the corner of Carthage and Roderick streets at 9am, finishing on the corner of Bourke Street and Griffin Avenue at about 12pm. Morning tea will be held at Anzac Park halfway along.
