Councillors carried a motion proposing waiving ground hire fees for the Tent City site during AgQuip at Wednesday’s April council meeting.
Council doesn’t expect the accommodation assistance to detract from any of Gunnedah’s motels or other accommodation facilities with all local facilities having already been consulted.
During the meeting, councillor Murray O’Keefe pushed for the assistance to have a flow on effect for Gunnedah’s community groups.
“I think it’s important for our organisation to trumpet the good work done by our local organistations,” Cr O’Keefe said.
“For me this would be an excellent opportunity for our community groups to provide things like a barbecue breakfast as a way of doing what they do best, fund raise.”
Cr Luke agreed with the objective of supporting the proposal and in turn Tent City supporting local businesses.
“I’m just thinking of the local benefit of this sort of thing,” Cr Luke said.
“While I’m favour of supporting Tent City in helping ease the demand for accommodation during AgQuip I would like for them to be encouraged to use local business and services throughout the event.”

Mayor Jamie Chaffey said the event would be a major economic benefit to the region.
“I know after speaking with members of the Tamworth Chamber of Commerce after last year’s event that economically AgQuip is massive for our region,” Cr Chaffey said.
“It is and has been a significant on-going event for our region for some years now and I much prefer to see our local benefit economically from this event.”
Gunnedah will host AgQuip from August 21-23 this year.
