The Tamworth Sports Dome recently held a come-and-try sports day for local seniors to gauge the need for a regular program.
Sports Dome program officer Jarrad Harland said he’d like to see as a weekly social sports day in Tamworth for seniors.

“As part of the NSW Seniors Festival, we decided to put on a come and try day with a few different sports, badminton, table tennis, bocce, just to see what the community need is for a social sporting day,” Mr Harland said.
“People could come for a couple of hours play some sport and get a bit of physical activity and just catch-up with some friends.”
Mr Harland said the main users of the dome were from a younger demographic playing in local competitions.
“The point of today was to see what the demand is in the community,” he said.
“Based off that and the feedback we get, we’re looking at exploring some ongoing programs.
“Whether that be a similar day to this with some different sports a morning tea and social aspects on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly sort of basis.”
Doug Tudhope went to the come-and-try day and said there was a need for more physical outlets for the city’s older folk.
“The more you’ve got on offer, the better, for me anyway, and probably for the health of most seniors,” Mr Tudhope said.
“I just think there’s a lot of benefit to moving, once you stop moving as a senior, or at any age, a lot of problems can develop from that.”
Living in a seniors community, Mr Tudhope said there wasn’t much available in terms of physical activity.
“You can sort of walk and do some other stuff, but not as physical as this,” he said.
