Storms hit the district about 6pm after the bureau of meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the North West Slopes and Plains.
Gunnedah was one of the areas hardest hit by the rolling storms with power outages reported on Saturday night.
About 100 homes were still left without power on Sunday morning.
Large hail stones, the size of golf balls, were reported at Moonbi, Kentucky, Uralla and Currabubula with residents taking to social media to post images of what they found.
But the Saturday storms didn’t bring along much rain, with about 5mm recorded in Tamworth and 4mm in Gunnedah.
Saturday's storms leave a much cooler weather outlook for the week with temperatures under 30 degrees predicted in Tamworth and Tamworth until Friday.
