The 56-year-old loves the challenge it provides. It’s one of the reasons he keeps coming back to play the game.
“I just like to get straight in there and into it, rather than waiting around,” Stevenson said.
“I’ve always enjoyed the challenge, I guess.
“I’m not a big hitter so I enjoy the chance to build an innings over a bit of time.”
Stevenson will be one of many Tamworth cricketers to play at the Over 50s National Cricket Championships in Orange over the Easter weekend.
The carnival will be another challenge for Stevenson, one of many he’s faced as he heads into his second year back playing cricket.
“It’s [vets cricket] 45 overs so you have to get on with it a little bit more than I’m used to,” Stevenson said.
“I’m also doing a bit of bowling and I’m really enjoying that.
“That’s added another challenge and another goal whenever I’m thrown the ball. I’m out to do the best by the boys.”
As far as this weekend goes, Stevenson can’t wait.
“I’m looking forward to the weekend and some competitive cricket,” he said.
“And I know it'll be competitive. Queensland are pretty strong in the 60s and 70s and they’ll be just as competitive in the 50s.
“It’ll be a good barometer for us all.”
Stevenson took the chance to thank Barry Everingham, Richard Rowlings and Greg Kellett for the roles they played in getting over 50s cricket up and running.
