It took Hatch to 10 career wins since he took up the training caper back in December 2015 and also saw the 21-year-old shoot past $100,000 in prizemoney.

“I knew about the 10 winners but I didn’t know about the prizemoney,” Hatch said last Tuesday.

“You’re always trying to do the best you can. Trying to get as many wins as possible.”

Hatch is a farrier by day and a horse trainer in his spare time.

He was “born and bred” into the horse racing industry.

Hatch follows in the training footsteps of grandfather, David, and father, Mark.

“It’s something always I thought I’d do,” Hatch said.

“As a kid growing up, I used to have tantrums if Dad wouldn't let me have a day off school to go to the races.

“I always love getting to the races and now I'm doing what I love.”

With 10 wins from 50 starts, Hatch’s most successful runners have been Warwick Avenue with three wins followed by Wedel (two) and now Schappose.

Schappose scored his second win in a row at Armidale last Monday and Hatch said the best was still to come from the three-year-old.

“He's improved out of sight since I got him,” Hatch said.

“I see a bit of potential. He's probably 12 months off being at his best. He has to mature and fill out a bit more. If he keeps improving, we’ll keep setting his plans higher and higher.

“He'll get over ground later on when he matures but he’s still very green.”
