THE region’s next generation of Aboriginal leaders have taken their first steps towards becoming guiding lights within their community, with the launch of the Gomeroi Culture Academy
Academy director Marc Sutherland said the program was designed to give its participants “strength within themselves and their own identity”.
“We come from a strong culture, a strong people and a strong family,” Mr Sutherland said.
“This is about building on those values and turning them into action.
“It’s about acknowledging we have a strong history, and how we can use this to support each other moving forward.”
The academy participates will take part in weekly workshops, one-on-one mentoring sessions to work towards their own self-determined goals and group excursions to do “on country learning”.
The program was made possible through the support of Joblink Plus, along with a federal government grant of $56,000.
