Last weekend Councillor Mark Rodda could be found at Hyman Park on Hillvue Road, planting five more young London Plane Trees on his mission “to make Hyman Park as green and appealing as Anzac Park in East Tamworth.”
“It does need a lot of man hours and work – but it can be done,” Mr Rodda said.
The councillor said that Tamworth Regional Council is in the process of “classifying” the regional parks, and had already given consideration to the plight of Hyman Park, by planting several Plane Trees, installing shade cloths and park tables, as well as another two CCTV cameras to ward off vandalism.
Last year both the Tamworth Aboriginal Medical Service and the West Tamworth Fire and Rescue flagged interest in building new centres on the parcel of land classified as Hyman Park on the east side of Hillvue road.
At the time of application TRC said that the money raised from those sales, if they go through, would be put into Hyman Park.
“That is great, but I think that might even be a bit overly-generous. I would like to see that money spent on parks and green spaces all over the region,” Mr Rodda said.
Current plans for Hyman Park already include building a new toilet block, as well as some more seating areas, although Mr Rodda would like to see an irrigation system installed to keep the grass green and the young shade trees healthy.
“Green spaces are so important to communities, and in Tamworth we should be doing everything we can to get people out and about and active to enhance their health and well being,” Mr Rodda said.
