A ROAD convoy carrying a special part of Australia’s military history is set to make its way through Gunnedah.

On Saturday, Gunnedah will play host to a retired Royal Australian Air Force (RAFF) C-47 (DC-3), affectionately known as a Dakota or “Gooney Bird” as it makes it’s way from the HMAS Albatross base to the RAAF base in Amberley, Queensland.
The aircraft, known as A65-86 will depart HMAS Albatross just after midnight on Friday, and is scheduled to arrive at the RAAF base in Queensland by about 3am on Monday.

Locals can expect to see the aircraft being transported on a large truck as it passes through various regional NSW towns on its three-day 1200km journey.
The aircraft will have its propellers, wings, elevators and tail fin removed to enable safe transit and be reassembled on arrival. The convoy will arrive in Gunnedah at 3pm on Saturday, before departing on Sunday at 5am.
Following the Gunnedah stop, the convoy will also pass through Boggabri at 7.30am on Sunday and Narrabri at 8am, the defence force said.
Also on the Sunday morning, the convoy will travel through Moree at 9.30am and Goondiwindi at 11.30am.
The defence force said all times and locations are subject to change.
