In a post on its Facebook page, Tamworth Regional Council called on the public to look after the Chaffey Park cricket ground after it’s believed to have been used as a slip-and-slide during wet weather.
It comes on the back of a string of similar incidents, with Dick Edwards Oval (Riverside 1), and Riverside 2 being vandalised in June, prompting the installation of bollards and CCTV.
Tamworth and District Cricket Association vice president Chris Paterson said it was a blow to lose a turf ground during the season.
"It's happened down at Riverside for years," he said.
"It's under control there now with our gates being locked up at 10.30pm at night.
“Chaffey is a bit different because we don't have that. You just wonder why people are doing it."
The third-grade turf oval was to be used as a back-up oval for upcoming cricket carnivals, including the Under-18 Country Championships.
“It just holds up the development of the young kids,” Mr Paterson said.
“It’s usually used every week, but it will be out of action.”
The community came out in support of the association after TRC confirmed the damage caused on Saturday would close the ground for the season.
“This now means that the grounds will be closed for the remainder of the year inconveniencing many clubs,” the post read.
“This type of behaviour impacts the entire community. Let's take some pride in our fields.”
The incident has not been reported to police.
