The National Over 70 Cricket Championships saw teams play three pool games before playoffs were held on the final day of the carnival.
After a win against Western Australia – where Tamworth’s Col Barton (40* and 1-1) and Mike Cashman (2-2) starred – NSW qualified for the third versus fourth playoff against South Australia.
Barton played his part again with 29 while Cashman score two not out from his limited opportunity and the third Tamworth player Peter Virgen didn’t bat as the 12th man. NSW posted an imposing 7-199 to give the side every chance of winning.
In the end, South Australia needed to go hell for leather in the match Cashman said “was a bit of a cliffhanger”.
South Australia needed 17 runs off the last over to clinch the win and third position but could only manage four as NSW won. The titles will be played on the Sunshine Coast next year.
