Oxley High School 15s girls basketball side finished eighth at NSW CHS Championships

Oxley High School’s 15s girls basketball side may have missed out on a win at the NSW CHS Championships in Gosford last week but the side never gave in.

Oxley took on teams from Mulwaree, West Wyalong and Sydney and took it to them all.

“We were very excited to get to the top eight and the girls were very competitive, even though we didn’t come away with a win,” Oxley High School teacher Gina Watt said.

“We held on until half-time against most teams.

“There was no real blowouts. We thought there’d be a couple by 50 points but we were quite competitive in all the games.

“They took a lot of confidence from the matches against other teams that were a bit older.”

The experience will help the girls on the local basketball scene while a number of the players will be able to play again next year.

“It was a great week. The girls were really well behaved and they all had fun,” Watt said.

“Six of them will be able to play in the team next year. It was a great learning curve and hopefully they can make it to the top eight again.”

Oxley progressed to the top eight after knocking over the likes of Quirindi and Byron Bay.

Watt said the way the girls worked together was impressive with a couple key players leading the way at the championships.

“They played really well as a team,” Watt said.

“Our leading players Georgia Griffiths and Samantha Schuberth both did really well.”

Lithgow High School ended up beating Endeavour Sports High in the final.
