The Canberra Capitals season of heartbreak continued in Adelaide on Wednesday night when skipper Nat Hurst missed a buzzer-beater three-point attempt in an 80-77 loss.
The Capitals will be licking their wounds when they arrive home on Thursday morning but have little time to dwell on another tight loss as they prepare for their third game in six days on Friday night.
The Capitals are in danger of having their season slip away and need to beat the Townsville Fire at the National Convention Centre to start resurrecting their finals bid.
Former Canberra skipper Abby Bishop was the chief destroyer in a tense battle, finishing with 21 points and 12 rebounds in a dominant performance.
The Capitals fell behind in the first half but clawed their way back into the contest and had a chance to send the game into overtime when Hurst got the ball with one second left in the game.
But Hurst's shot missed and the Capitals have now won just two of their six games in a shortened WNBL campaign.
A loss at home to the Fire would be a ???nother blow to their hopes of ending their six-year finals drought, but coach Paul Goriss must find a way to reignite their season off the back of a gruelling road trip.
