Simon Swan was allegedly armed with a knife when he entered the West Tamworth McDonald’s on Bridge St about 5.30am on Saturday.
Police claim the 31-year-old went around the counter and grabbed a staff member from behind.
He then allegedly demanded staff open the till while threatening them with an object.
Staff complied and the man fled a short time later with a small amount of cash.
Police were alerted to the hold-up and responded quickly. Officers were able to identify the man after reviewing the store’s video footage.
Following inquiries, police arrested the man at Tamworth property about an hour after the incident.
Police said the McDonald’s staff were not physically injured but were shaken by the incident.
Swan was charged with robbery while armed with an offensive weapon and refused bail by police.
He fronted an out-of-sessions bail hearing in Tamworth Local Court on Sunday where he was formally denied bail and ordered to remain in custody until Tuesday.
