Both states have expressed interest in hosting TV's 'night of nights' with New South Wales tourism minister Adam Marshall hoping to lure the show to Dubbo while his Queensland counterpart would like to see it on the Gold Coast.

But industry insiders have cast doubt over whether regional NSW would have the right venue or appropriate accommodation to host thousands of actors, producers and local celebrities flown in for the big event.

Queensland painted itself as the frontrunner on Monday, with tourism minister Kate Jones confirming the state government was in discussions with both Bauer Media and Nine Entertainment.

"What we've seen from the Victorian government over the last 24 hours is sour grapes," she said. "They've been left dropping the ball on this one. If the Logies stack up, we'd love to have them here. In fact, I say to Karl Stefanovic - why don't you stand up for your home state of Queensland and support the Logies bid?"

The Today host has threatened to boycott the Logies if they are held on the Gold Coast. But Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate said he embraced Australia's "tacky industry" coming to his "tacky city".

"All those superstars in film and television, why wouldn't they want to come to the Gold Coast?" he said.

The Queensland government and Gold Coast Council have both offered to open their coffers to help subsidise the 2018 Logies.

Speculation on where the Logies would land next began on Monday after Victoria's tourism minister John Eren confirmed the government would no longer stump up the cash to keep the awards in Melbourne

Bauer Media general manager Jayne Ferguson said a location for next year's awards was yet to be finalsed, but expected an announcement to be made very soon.

"We've received a lot of interest and numerous bids from different states," she said.

While The Gold Coast would appear to be the stronger contender, Mr Marshall was still clinging to the hope that the Logies would conduct a regional tour of his state on Monday. Although, it is understood the minister's office hasn't heard anything from TV Week or Nine since it submitted its expression of interest on behalf of Tamworth, Dubbo and Albury in May.

Defending the Victorian government's decision to end its financial relationship with the Logies Mr Eren refused to say how much taxpayer money was poured into the 2016 awards or how long the state government had been subsidising the event.

He also declined to say precisely how the funds were used, but did admit the money was "substantial".

"This is not a happy day for us," he said. "If there was value attached to this event - if it was not an exclusive event, if it brought money to our state, if it created jobs - I'd be all for it. They [the Logies] can still have it here. We just can't give any taxpayer money."
