Members of the club have been left devastated over the blaze, which saw more than $4000 in model planes and “irreplaceable aviation magazines” perish on Saturday morning.
A tractor, ride-on lawn mower and brush cutter used to maintain the airfield and the shed that housed them at the Racecourse Rd property at Somerton were also destroyed.
Club president Larry Hoskins said insurance assessors were expected to head to the property on Tuesday morning to record the damage, but he believed the incident was a deliberate move to “ruin the club”.
“It’s very depressing,” he said.
“The timing of this fire is rather peculiar as it is just one month out from our major event of the year.”
The incident is under investigation by police and anyone who has information is urged to contact Tamworth Police Station on 6768 2999.
