She was born on July 16, 1914, less than two weeks before the start of World War I in what is now known as Slovenia.
Before moving to Australia about 60 years ago, Mrs Figar’s homeland went through a great deal of change, originally a part of Austria, before becoming Yugoslavia and presently Slovenia from the 1990s.
She moved around Australia with her daughter Maria Davidson, spending time in Wollongong, Inverell and Newcastle.
Mrs Davidson said the party at Nazareth House was “overpowering” with the warmth shown towards her mother.
Woolworths donated carnations, which are considered a national flower of Slovenia, for the birthday celebrations.
Fellow resident Doalis Fester helped organise the birthday do and, while she’s not related, said she did it for Leopolda’s smile.
