TRC Acting Manager Horticulture and Recreation, Murray Russell, said the pool was closed in the interest of swimmers’ safety when the damage was discovered on Wednesday.
“The expanding steel has caused the concrete to split behind the tiles and a section of this concrete has now broken off, leaving about 1.5m of exposed broken concrete and corroded reinforcement on the edge of the pool,” Mr Russell said.
Mr Russell said staff are investigating repair options, however, it will be a complex job and neither the estimated cost, nor timeframe for the work to be completed, is yet known.
Both public pools have already come under scrutiny recently, following a closure due to the over-chlorination of the water at City because of a faulty pump, as well as calls for a new aquatic centre to be built to replace the current ageing facilities.
