The 21-year-old man cannot be named for legal reasons but has been refused bail in Armidale Local Court on three charges of aggravated sexual assault.
Police allege he attacked a 17-year-old girl, who was known to him, about 10pm on January 5 at Dumaresq Dam.
He was arrested by Armidale detectives at a home just before 6.30am on Tuesday and will remain in custody until the case returns to court later this month.
Police have confirmed investigations into the alleged incident are continuing.
New England Inspector Roger Best said investigators were appealing for witnesses who were near the dam between 10 and 11pm on Thursday, January 5.
“In particular, police are looking for the owners of two vehicles, the first vehicle is a 2006 or 2007 79 series 1VD Landcrusier single cab,” he said, adding the navy utility had a bullbar and steel tray on the back. “The second vehicle is described as a blue coloured Mitsubishi Triton.”
