Eric Bruce Blundell is facing seven charges after he was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning in Tingira St.
Police said they were called to reports of a domestic violence-related incident at a house in the street about 2.20am.
Officers were confronted by a 45-year-old man who was allegedly armed with a knife.
Two officers claim Blundell was behaving in an aggressive manner and made a number of threats to harm officers during the confrontation.
Blundell is alleged to have ignored requests to drop the knife and advanced towards the officers.
Police said they were forced to deploy a taser and the man fell to the ground and is alleged to have continued to struggle with officers.
He was eventually subdued and arrested.
Blundell was taken to Tamworth Police Station, and following investigations, was charged with seven offences.
He is accused of being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence, namely that he was armed with a knife.
He is also facing charges of assaulting police, resisting arrest, intimidating police, two counts of domestic intimidation and one count of domestic common assault.
Blundell was refused bail by Tamworth police and appeared in Tamworth Local Court on Tuesday afternoon where a solicitor lodged a fresh application for release.
But Magistrate Clare Farnan denied the 45-year-old bail and found he was an unacceptable risk of committing a serious offence, endangering the safety of victims, individuals or the community and interfering with witnesses or evidence.
Ms Farnan ordered Blundell to remain in custody until the case returns to court in February.
Tamworth police said neither officer was injured during the alleged confrontation.
