The Building Better Regions Fund, which is only for rural, regional and remote communities, will invest in local events and activities, ranging from a theatre production to a major sporting event or even business training for young locals.
Applications are assessed against projects of a similar size, so small community projects will not compete against large events. Infrastructure projects can also apply for funding and will be assessed in a separate stream.
New England MP Barnaby Joyce said when the government invested in a region, it builds confidence across the entire community.
“We’ve designed the Building Better Regions Fund to back projects that help build the kinds of communities our children and grandchildren either want to stay in or come back to,” Mr Joyce said.
