Tamworth Business Chamber has applied for $250,000 to install more cameras following a spate of vandalism through Bridge St and the Carter St sporting fields.
Chamber president Lia Mahony said businesses deserved the opportunity to conduct business without the added burden of paying for vandals.
“We want our local businesses to not have to worry whether their shopfronts will be vandalised at night and that’s why we have joined with the council and Kevin Anderson in an application to fund more CCTV in Tamworth,” Ms Mahony said.
Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson said the need for more cameras became apparent after recent meetings with business owners, the chamber and Tamworth Regional Council (TRC).
“Our community can’t keep putting up with windows being smashed, walls being covered with graffiti and our sporting fields being torn up by petty vandals,” Mr Anderson said.
“We need to keep looking at how we assist our police in addressing anti-social behaviour in our community and the installation of CCTV in these two locations will go a long way in doing that.”
TRC mayor Col Murray said CCTV had proven to be a highly successful tool in identifying and prosecuting criminals in Tamworth.
“Council’s placement of CCTV cameras in Bicentennial Park and in the CBD has already led to a number of prosecutions for malicious damage,” Cr Murray said.
“The opportunity to extend our CCTV network to cover the Carter St sporting fields and the Bridge St retail precinct means any criminal behaviour ... will be captured.”
