Peel Schools Carnival committee chairman Peter Blom was re-elected Tuesday night with a full committee, barring a treasurer.
Country Rugby League representatives Bert Lowrie and Scott Bone also attended and had some major input for a carnival which will be played on three days in March and May with a new Ladies League Tag division and possible appearances from various NRL stars.
While Blom night have been broken down on the side of the road near Calala yesterday when talking to The Leader by mobile telephone, the Peel Schools was far from broke in a year where this year’s carnival was cancelled for the first time.
“We had a fantastic night,” Blom said.
“We had 15 people at the AGM with another seven apologies from people who also want to help.
“We’ve got a full committee except for a treasurer.
“Bert Lowrie and Scott Bone were there from the CRL and they had some great input to help us out greatly as well.
“They want to help us make it a week of celebration of rugby league.”
Lowrie, CRL operations manager, said hosting the Peel Schools in the lead- up to the 2016 Country v City Origin match would create a festival of football in the Tamworth area which will feature some very high-quality rugby league.
“We believe the revised schedule, which now features Ladies League Tag, provides the best opportunity for all teams to enjoy the carnival for another 60 years and beyond,” Lowrie said.
Blom said the 2016 carnival would be split into three days.
“We will be having an open carnival on March 23,” he said.
“That will have two divisions, A and B.
“We will try to attract the elite schools from the Schoolboy Cup for that with Farrer.
“The B Division will be for the local schools so they don’t have to play schools like Farrer.”
“On May 4 (Wednesday) we will have a secondary carnival and that will include ladies’ league tag teams for the first time.
“Then on the Saturday (May 7) we will have the primary divisions.
“That’s the day before the City-Country match at Scully Park and we might be able to attract a number of NRL players to the primary carnival to talk and interact with the boys.”
