Mr Gleeson claimed the top individual award at the ceremony, which also included the annual Seniors Week concert.
Tamworth U3A (University of the Third Age), which gives seniors the chance to share their knowledge and interests, was the group winner.
Appropriately, Mr Gleeson then went on to emcee the annual variety concert.
After undergoing triple bypass surgery at St Vincent’s Hospital just three weeks ago, he told the concert audience to be recognised in such a way was “very humbling and quite unexpected”.
Highly commended certificates also went to Tamworth residents Phyllis Bylund, Jim Finucane, and Jan Morris.
Awards were also presented yesterday for the Nundle community, with Shirley Ryan the individual winner and Nundle Public School taking out the group award.
Today, Seniors Week awards will be presented for the Manilla community, and on Thursday for Barraba.
