THE Central Western Daily has a proud history of covering local sport, but it is not often it gets the opportunity to help put Orange on the national sporting stage which is what yesterday’s sponsorship announcement for the Evocities MTB series will do.

Fairfax Media, publisher of the Central Western Daily, and half a dozen other sponsors with strong regional connections, have chipped in to ensure the Evocities series of mountain bike races will have the biggest prize money in Australia.
The result will be an MTB series which attracts the cream of Australian mountain bike racing for a national audience.
It is an exciting venture for this newspaper to be part of but it is equally exciting for the cities of Wagga Wagga, Dubbo, Bathurst, Tamworth and Albury and their local daily papers which will also be involved.
The MTB series echoes the collaborative nature of the Evocities concept our sponsorship is designed to promote. The common goal of the participating cities is to highlight the lifestyle and career opportunities they have to offer metropolitan residents looking for an alternative to the congested daily commute and the big-city mortgage.
Readers familiar with the Evocities billboard campaigns on Sydney motorways which compared city mortgages with country mortgages will understand this major sporting event is another opportunity to highlight the state’s Evocities.
The Evocities MTB series will put each regional city in turn into the spotlight. Organisers expect the series to attract thousands of competitors and spectators, many of them metropolitan residents. Many more will see footage of the races on TV and be exposed to the Evocities concept, perhaps for the first time.
As the mayors of Orange and Dubbo said at the launch yesterday, it is a natural collaboration between the regional cities and the regional Fairfax Media community papers which serve them.
We could not agree more.
