About 11.30am, the Mitsubishi Pajero was travelling along Browns Ln when police said it failed to give way at the Moore Creek Rd intersection.
The four-wheel drive slammed into the path of an oncoming Toyota Hilux, causing major damage. The 49-year-old L-plater was trapped in the Pajero for about 50 minutes before she was freed by ambulance rescue personnel.
Her 51-year-old male passenger suffered back injuries and both were taken to Tamworth hospital in a stable condition.
Another patient, the driver of the Hilux, was also treated at the scene by paramedics.
The crash blocked Moore Creek Rd for more than an hour before the wreckage was cleared.
Police confirmed yesterday afternoon the driver of the Pajero would be issued an infringement notice.
