Miss Longhurst lived in Inverell until she finished Year 12 two-and-a-half years ago and, on Tuesday night, Kylie Minogue asked her to join her team.
She performed Peter Allen’s Don’t Cry Out Loud for the blind audition and now has to make it through the battle rounds starting Sunday night, to keep her place in Kylie’s team.
The Brisbane Zumba teacher said the auditions were in January, so it was a long process.
“I was petrified, when I stepped on that stage, I have never felt so nervous in my life,” she said.
“Right at the end, Joel surprised me by turning around. As soon as Kylie turned, it was a massive relief, I could just enjoy the rest of the experience.”
She said, before the auditions, she had Ricky Martin’s team in mind, but was happy to work with any of the coaches.
“I’m so excited to be working with little pocket rocket Kylie Minogue,” she said.
Minogue told Miss Longhurst that she could see a show being built around her.
“It’s funny because mum and dad initially were weighing up whether to call me Megan or Kylie, but mum was like, there was only one Kylie, the pop princess,” she said.
Miss Longhurst said all the coaches were genuinely wanting to help the contestants get the most from the show, and the experience still felt surreal.
“It didn’t really feel real. It still doesn’t feel real – I’m just in a lot of shock,” she said.
“It’s a bit weird watching it back and I’m a perfectionist, so I was picking (my performance) to pieces.”
Miss Longhurst is being supported by her mum and brother who both still live in Inverell and her sister who is in the army in Afghanistan.
Her father died seven years ago from motor neurone disease, but she said she knew he would be proud of what she was doing.
“I sing for myself, but obviously my dad is a big part of me,” she said.
“I know that he would have wanted me to continue chasing my dreams and this is what I want to do.”
Miss Longhurst sings again in the first battle round starting on Sunday night.
