Last Friday’s sports day was another enjoyable event, Duri School P&C treasurer Charmaine Kesby said.
“There were 143 riders participating from schools in Armidale, to Belmont and Ellalong in the Hunter, Narrabri and numerous schools from around the Tamworth district,” she said.
“Duri had seven of its own students competing, who particularly look forward to their own day, after competing at other schools’ horse sports around the district.”
The horse sports are organised by the P&C as a major fundraiser, with funds to go towards major school excursions and purchasing school resources and learning material and sporting equipment.
Riders compete in eight events throughout the day, culminating in awarding trophies for highest scoring riders in each age group at the end of the day.
In the morning’s riding events, Stephanie Penrose from Oxley High School was judged the Champion Senior Girl and Supreme Rider.
Lachlan Ware from Farrer Memorial High School was Champion Senior Boy Rider, Lara De Jong from Calrossy Anglican School was Champion Junior Girl Rider and Bradley Sadler from Quirindi Public School was judged Champion Junior Boy.
These riders received trophies donated by Precious Pets (Supreme Rider), and Lifestyle and Rural Properties.
Some other major prize winners for the day received great trophy rugs donated by The Burke Family, Hunter & New England Equine Dental Service, Dr Eds Equine Veterinary Services, and Wiregrass Stockhorses.
The highest overall point scorers for the day were Laura Sadler from Quirindi Primary School the Junior Girl, Haydon Clarke of Niangala Public School the Junior Boy, Kate Cruikshank from New England Girls’ School the Senior Girl and Lachlan Ware from Farrer Memorial High the Senior Boys’ overall point score.
“The Duri P&C Committee is very grateful of the sponsorship and support it has received from local businesses towards the success of the day,” Kesby said.
“Some of our other major sponsors include Barastoc, Ridley Agriproducts, McDonald Bros Transport and Equissage Massage Therapy.”
