VIDEO: Daft Punk to launch new album at country show
World-famous electronic music duo Daft Punk have chosen a undoubtedly unexpected location for the global launch of their new album – the Wee Waa Show.
The town of 2100 -– more commonly known as Australia’s cotton capital – will reportedly host the first playback of Random Access Memories, the French group’s fourth album, on May 17.
It has been reported Daft Punk themselves will not play live, but it is understood international music media will attend the event and stream the album online to a worldwide audience.
Narrabri Shire mayor Conrad Bolton told The Leader he was approached by Sony Music a few weeks ago and first thought it was a practical joke by one of his mates.
“It’s so far from left field,” Cr Bolton said.
He said the duo’s management had trawled statistical data looking for a remote town of the town’s size and the name Wee Waa appealed.
A promotional DVD of the town shown to the duo cemented the decision.
Cr Bolton said the contrast between Daft Punk’s identity and that of the town was in keeping with the duo’s love of surprise.
It was a happy coincidence the planned launch date fell during the show, he said, with Daft Punk wanting a festive atmosphere for the launch.
“It was almost like it was meant to be,” Cr Bolton said.
Despite the global excitement surrounding the album’s debut, he said organisers were planning for about 4000 people to attend, because they– and the group - wanted to retain the country show atmosphere.
Footage of the faces and places of Wee Waa will also be broadcast during the launch, giving the town a worldwide audience.
Sony Music could not be contacted for comment.
