In particular, the journalists from both The Northern Daily Leader and the ABC showed their care for our community and its values. They used their skills, resources and local knowledge to assist us to help others in the bush and in doing so, made our community a richer place.
The Aero Club organised a coach to attend the Coonabarabran Jockey Club Bushfire Appeal and asked for donations of plants to help restore destroyed gardens. A small organisation, we relied on support from the local media to get our message to the Tamworth community.
Our Macpherson’s coach with a volunteer driver carried a range of people, including some trainee pilots from the Australian Defence Forces and some who had never been to the races before. All wanted to help.
We took significant cash donations offered without request and enough plants to fill to overflowing the luggage hold of the coach. The mayor of the Warrumbungle Shire, Peter Shinton, and general manager Steve Loane asked that their thanks be conveyed to the people of Tamworth for this “magnificent” support.
Those affected in Coonabarabran were moved, some to tears at the evidence that strangers care. It was a day I personally will never forget. We could not have done this without your assistance.
