Police and State Emergency Services officers will join Pol-Air conducting a ground search this morning in an area of the Basket Swamp National Park, 14 kilometres north-east of Tenterfield, after park rangers made the grisly discovery at 11.20am on Friday morning.
Detectives from the New England command joined forensic investigators and set up a large crime scene around the area.
Roads into the park were blocked yesterday as extra police and searchers arrived.
The body is believed to be in an advanced state of decomposition and a post-mortem will be conducted to determine the sex of the person and to establish a cause of death.
Detectives are asking anyone who may be missing a relation, friend or loved one to contact police, along with anyone who may have camped recently in the area.
The park, which has no camping facilities covers an area of 2,820 hectares and includes Timbarra Lookout and Basket Swamp Falls.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
